SMS - or Short Message Service

SMS is the now rapidly growing text communication system. Rather than making a long call to cover a simple purpose, an SMS can be sent as a text message to other mobile users quickly and cheaply.

SMS stands for Short Message Service as there is a limit of 160 characters that can be sent in a single message. Some phones like the Nokia 3310 can overcome this by sending out longer messages as multi-part message.
